If you’re still using Mixcraft 6 (or older) you really owe it to yourself to upgrade to Mixcraft 7. It includes tons of awesome new instruments, plug-ins, loops and features, and at $30, it’s super affordable. In today’s entry and video we’ll cover some of the highlights.

• 64-bit Support – Contrary to popular belief, 64-bit virtual instruments and plug-ins won’t sound twice as good as 32-bit ones… in actuality 64-bit plug-ins can access far more of your computer’s RAM which is a boon for demanding plug-ins and sampler instruments that need to load a whole lot of sample data at once. And unlike most competing DAWs, Mixcraft actually lets you simultaneously use 32- and 64-bit plugins, so you can rub that in your friends faces.

• Omni and Alpha Sampler Instruments –If you’ve ever tried to create your own custom instruments and keymaps using a VST sampler instrument, you’ve probably noticed that they can be really complicated and hard to use. But we’re Acoustica and we like things that are easy to use, so we came up with a couple super easy to use sampler instruments:

First is Alpha Sampler. You open one up, and drag and drop an audio file from Mixcraft’s library, the Mixcraft workspace, or even the Windows desktop, and wha-bam, the sample instantly maps across the entire keyboard and is ready to rock. Additionally, instruments and keymaps automatically save and load with your Mixcraft project.

If you’re familiar with the any of the Akai MPC drum samplers, you’ll be right at home with Omni Sampler. It’s designed primarily for drums, loops, and other one–shot kinda stuff, and like Alpha Sampler, simply drag and drop audio from pretty much anywhere onto its pads, and you’re all set. The big difference here is that instead of having just one sample loaded at a time, Omni Sampler has 127 pad locations with a grid of 16 viewable in the main window. On the left of its interface, you can bank up and down to view all the pad and sample locations. Omni sampler works great with hardware USB pad controllers, but there’s no reason you can’t control it with a USB or MIDI keyboard.

• Step Editor – While we’re talking about drummy kinda stuff, MC7 has a new editing window which is not only convenient, but it’s really fun to use. It has a grid layout similar in spirit to the classic Roland TR-series drum machines, but it’s far more flexible, because you can set the step resolution and pattern length to whatever you like. It’s fun to use because beats are created by simply clicking steps on and off, and I find you end up creating patterns you never would’ve thought of by tapping with your fingers.

• Workflow Enhancements – Behind the scenes, Mixcraft’s programming has been optimized for speedier performance, especially with projects containing large numbers of MIDI and audio clips. We prettied up the interface with a darker look that’s a little easier on the eyes, and there are numerous other visual enhancements that help make Mixcraft more intuitive.

We also added searchable instrument presets, searchable effects lists, a recently used effects list, and configurable “favorite” folders for quick access to your favorite effects.

• New Instruments – Besides the aforementioned Alpha Sampler and Omni Sampler instruments, Mixcraft 7 adds Applied Acoustics Systems “Journeys” string modeling synth (as in plucking, bowing, scraping, etc…) as well as G-Sonique’s “Renegade”, an analog/digital-synth–of–doom squarely aimed at the EDM/techno set.

• Performance Panel – Mixcraft 7’s Performance Panel is a fast, fun, and easy to use grid where you can create switchable sets of audio and MIDI clips. It’s great for live performance, because clips automatically sync to the project tempo, and you can easily switch sets or turn loops on and off on–the–fly, letting you create and manipulate live music with lightning speed. The Performance Panel also works great in conjunction a USB grid controller such as the Novation Launchpad.

• Automation Cut/Copy/Paste –This one may not seem all that exciting, but if you do a lot of mix automation, it’s a huge time saver. Just highlight any region of automation, hit control-C to copy it, position the caret at the new desired location and hit control-V to copy. Easy–peasy.
